Overview

Estadio Gran Canaria, opened in 2003, is the largest football stadium in the Canary Islands and the home of UD Las Palmas. With a capacity of 32,400 spectators, this modern venue underwent transformative renovations in 2015 when athletics tracks were removed to bring fans dramatically closer to the pitch. The stadium features vibrant blue and yellow seats representing UD Las Palmas' colours and offers excellent sightlines throughout the continuous bowl design. Selected as a venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the stadium is approved for expansion to 44,000 capacity, cementing its status as the archipelago's premier football venue.

Located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the island of Gran Canaria, the stadium enjoys year-round warm weather and represents fierce Canarian identity and pride. Like other passionate Spanish stadiums such as San Mamés or Anoeta, Gran Canaria creates a uniquely intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams. History

Origins and Construction (2003)

Estadio Gran Canaria officially opened on 8 May 2003 with a friendly match between Las Palmas and Anderlecht, with Rubén Castro scoring the historic first goal. Built to replace the aging Estadio Insular, which had served Las Palmas since 1949, the new stadium initially featured athletics tracks and a capacity of around 31,250. The venue was designed by architecture firm Gómez-Acebo & Asociados as a multi-purpose facility that could host athletics competitions.

Transformation to Football-Specific Venue (2015)

For over a decade, the stadium maintained its original configuration, but the distance between fans and pitch proved unsatisfactory for football atmosphere. In 2014, Las Palmas approved a significant renovation project. The athletics tracks were removed in the 2015-16 season, with stands extended closer to the pitch. The seats were repainted in the club's blue and yellow colours, and improved facilities were added. The transformation enhanced capacity to 32,400 and created a proper football-specific environment.

Major Events and International Recognition

The stadium has hosted Spanish Supercopa matches and important European fixtures throughout its history, establishing itself as a significant venue in Spanish football.

Modern Era and 2030 World Cup

In June 2024, FIFA announced Gran Canaria as one of the venues for the 2030 World Cup, with approved plans to expand capacity to 44,000 spectators, cementing the stadium's status as the Canary Islands' premier sporting venue.

Tickets & Tours

How to Get UD Las Palmas Tickets

Securing tickets for Estadio Gran Canaria is generally straightforward for most La Liga matches, though the unique island location and passionate local following can create sell-outs for high-profile fixtures. As the only Canary Islands representative in La Liga, UD Las Palmas commands fierce local support, making the stadium atmosphere special even for routine matches.

Official Channels

The UD Las Palmas official website (udlaspalmas.es) is the primary source for match tickets. The online box office typically opens 2-3 weeks before each match, with prices ranging from €30 for behind-the-goal sections to €75 for central Tribuna Oeste seats. Season ticket holders (abonados) occupy significant sections, particularly in the Tribuna Oeste and parts of Tribuna Este. Matches against clubs with large away followings or Canarian derbies (when other island clubs visit in Copa del Rey) can sell out quickly—book early for these fixtures.

The stadium box office at Estadio Gran Canaria (Calle Fondos de Segura, s/n) opens on match days and selected weekdays. Box office hours are typically Monday-Friday 10:00-14:00 and 16:00-20:00, with extended hours on match days starting 3 hours before kickoff. You can purchase tickets in person, though online booking is more convenient. The box office accepts cash and cards.

Phone bookings are available through the club ticket hotline, though English-language support may be limited. Online booking is strongly recommended for international visitors.

Ticket Packages & Hospitality

Estadio Gran Canaria offers several VIP and hospitality packages for fans seeking premium experiences. The Palcos VIP (VIP boxes) in Tribuna Oeste provide private box seating, exclusive lounge access, premium food and beverage service featuring Canarian specialities, and the best central views. Packages typically cost €120-250+ per person depending on the opponent. These packages are particularly popular for combining football with island hospitality.

Travel packages combining match tickets with hotel accommodation in Las Palmas or resort areas are available through sports travel specialists and island tour operators. Given Gran Canaria's status as a major tourist destination, these packages often bundle tickets, beachfront hotels, and sometimes island excursions. Prices vary widely based on accommodation standard and match importance, but offer convenience for visitors combining football with a Canary Islands holiday.

Third-Party Ticket Sellers

Reputable secondary ticket marketplaces like Viagogo, StubHub, and LiveFootballTickets occasionally offer Estadio Gran Canaria tickets, particularly useful when official channels sell out. Expect premium pricing—often 30-100% above face value for high-demand matches. The island location means fewer ticket resale options compared to mainland stadiums, so official channels should be your first choice.

Travel agencies specialising in football tourism can arrange complete packages including match tickets, flights to Gran Canaria, accommodation, and airport transfers. This option particularly suits international visitors wanting hassle-free experiences, though you'll pay a premium over arranging components separately.

Booking

Best Seats at Estadio Gran Canaria

For the optimal Estadio Gran Canaria experience, the central sections of Tribuna Oeste (West Stand, sections 20-30, rows 15-30) offer the best combination of excellent sightlines, comfort, and match overview. These elevated central seats provide perfect tactical perspectives whilst keeping you close to the action thanks to the 2015 athletics track removal. The continuous bowl design ensures there are no bad seats—every position offers good views with fans brought much closer to the pitch than the original 2003 configuration.

Tier Structure

Estadio Gran Canaria features a single-tier continuous bowl design wrapping around the entire pitch. Following the 2015 renovation that removed the athletics track, the stadium's stands rise in one uninterrupted tier from pitch level to the upper rows. This single-tier configuration eliminates the division between lower and upper levels found in larger stadiums, creating an intimate atmosphere where all spectators enjoy excellent proximity and unobstructed sightlines to the action.

Tribuna Oeste (West Stand - Main Stand)

The Tribuna Oeste offers the best overall views and houses the main grandstand with VIP boxes and media facilities. Sections in the centre of this stand (sections 20-30) provide elevated, central views ideal for following the entire match. These premium seats typically cost €50-75 for La Liga matches and offer excellent comfort and facilities. Corporate hospitality, including the Palcos VIP boxes with Canarian cuisine, is concentrated here. The atmosphere is more reserved than other sections—perfect for families and those prioritizing views and comfort over intense vocal support.

Tribuna Este (East Stand - Value Option)

The Tribuna Este, opposite the main stand, provides similarly excellent views at lower prices (€35-60). The central sections offer comparable viewing quality to the West stand without the premium price, making this the best value in the stadium. This side has become increasingly popular with local families and knowledgeable supporters. The atmosphere is slightly more vocal than Tribuna Oeste whilst maintaining good viewing angles. An excellent choice for fans wanting central positions at fair prices.

Preferencia Norte (North End - Ultra Section)

The Preferencia Norte houses Las Palmas' most passionate supporters, particularly the ultra group "Unión Deportiva". This section generates constant noise with drums, displays impressive banners and choreographies, and leads the stadium's chanting and singing throughout the 90 minutes. The atmosphere is intense, authentic, and represents true Canarian football passion. However, the behind-the-goal perspective is less ideal for watching tactical play development. Tickets are affordable at €30-50. Choose this section if atmosphere and being part of the singing support matters more than perfect views.

Preferencia Sur (South End - Family & Away Section)

The Preferencia Sur provides good atmosphere though typically less intense than the ultra Norte section. Away supporters are usually allocated sections here, particularly corners, with allocations varying by opponent (larger clubs receive more space). Families often choose this end for its balance of atmosphere, accessibility, and reasonable prices (€30-55). The end-on perspective is similar to Norte but with a more family-friendly environment.

VIP & Hospitality

Estadio Gran Canaria offers premium hospitality experiences through the Palcos VIP (VIP boxes) in Tribuna Oeste. These private boxes provide exclusive lounge access, premium food and beverage service featuring Canarian specialities, and the best central views of the action. Hospitality packages typically range from €120-250+ per person depending on the opponent. For the 2030 World Cup, these facilities will be significantly enhanced. Contact UD Las Palmas directly for hospitality bookings.

Accessibility

Estadio Gran Canaria provides accessibility facilities throughout the stadium. Wheelchair spaces with companion seating are available in designated areas in both Tribuna Oeste and Tribuna Este. The stadium features accessible entrances with ramps, accessible toilets on all levels, and dedicated parking spaces for disabled visitors close to accessible gates. For visitors with sensory impairments, assistive services can be arranged in advance. Book accessible seating directly through the UD Las Palmas ticket office, where staff can advise on the best positions based on individual needs.

Pro Tips

  • Best atmosphere: Preferencia Norte with the Unión Deportiva ultras for authentic, intense Canarian passion
  • Best views: Central Tribuna Oeste (sections 20-30) for perfect balance of proximity and tactical overview
  • Best value: Tribuna Este central sections offer comparable views at lower prices
  • Family sections: Preferencia Sur offers good atmosphere with a more family-friendly environment
  • Row selection: Mid-to-upper rows (15-35) offer the best compromise between proximity and panoramic overview
  • Early arrival: Come 60 minutes early to enjoy the pre-match atmosphere and secure good concourse positions

Match Day Experience

Match day at Estadio Gran Canaria offers a unique island football experience that combines Spanish football passion with Canarian culture.

Pre-Match (2-3 hours before)

Fans typically gather several hours before kickoff in the city centre, particularly around Parque Santa Catalina and the Vegueta old town. The pre-match ritual centres around tapas at local bars and cafés, where supporters discuss the upcoming game whilst sampling Canarian specialities like "papas arrugadas" (wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce) and local fish dishes. The city's beachfront promenade, Las Canteras, is another popular pre-match location. The warm climate means matches are comfortable year-round, with many evening kickoffs to avoid midday heat.

Inside the Stadium

Approaching the stadium, you'll see the distinctive blue and yellow colours everywhere - flags, scarves, and club merchandise. Street vendors sell souvenirs and snacks around the venue. Inside, the atmosphere builds from about 30 minutes before kickoff. The Unión Deportiva ultra group in the Preferencia Norte leads the chanting, with impressive choreographies and constant singing throughout matches. The compact bowl design helps sound reverberate effectively. Stadium facilities are modern with good bathrooms and wide concourses, though these can become crowded at half-time.

Food & Drink

Concessions offer typical stadium fare including bocadillos (sandwiches), hot dogs, and drinks, along with local snacks. Many fans prefer to eat beforehand given Las Palmas' excellent food scene with fresh seafood, Canarian cheeses, and traditional tapas. The stadium has multiple kiosks serving cold drinks, essential during warmer daytime matches.

After the Match

Post-match, fans either head back to the city centre or to local bars in the surrounding neighbourhoods. The beachfront areas are particularly popular for post-game discussions and celebrations or commiserations. The warm evenings mean outdoor terraces remain busy late into the night. Many supporters gather along Las Canteras promenade or around Parque Santa Catalina to continue the matchday experience.

International Visitor Tips: The matchday experience is family-friendly, with a noticeable number of children and multi-generational groups. The island setting means many fans have travelled from other parts of Gran Canaria or even other Canary Islands, creating a sense of community and shared identity. The club's yellow and blue colours are worn with pride as symbols of Canarian identity.

Getting There

🚇 Metro

Las Palmas does not have a metro or tram system, unlike many Spanish cities. The island capital relies exclusively on buses and taxis for public transport. Gran Canaria's compact geography and Las Palmas' well-organized bus network make the stadium easily accessible without rail transport. The Guaguas Municipales bus system, operated by Global, provides comprehensive coverage across Las Palmas and connects the stadium to all major areas including the port, beaches, and city centre.

🚌 Bus

Multiple city bus lines serve Estadio Gran Canaria directly, making buses the most convenient transport option. Routes 1, 3, 21, 23, and 44 all stop at or very near the stadium entrance on Calle Fondos de Segura. From the city centre (Teatro Pérez Galdós or Parque Santa Catalina), take line 1 or 23 - these are the most frequent services, running every 10-15 minutes during daytime hours and every 15-20 minutes evenings. Journey time ranges from 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. Line 21 connects from Las Canteras beach area (25 minutes), whilst line 44 serves the southern residential districts. On match days, Guaguas Municipales increases frequency on routes 1 and 23, often adding extra buses 90 minutes before kickoff and immediately after final whistle. Services continue until approximately midnight, though post-match crowds can mean 15-20 minute waits. Single tickets cost €1.40 (exact change preferred), or purchase a rechargeable Tarjeta Insular card (€2 card fee + credit) for discounted fares of €0.85 per journey - excellent value if staying multiple days. Cards can be purchased and recharged at tobacconists, the main bus station, or automated machines. Night bus service (routes starting with "N") operates reduced frequency after midnight but doesn't directly serve the stadium - taxis become necessary for late returns.

🅿️ Parking

The stadium has limited official parking facilities directly on Calle Fondos de Segura, with approximately 200 spaces in designated car parks immediately adjacent to the venue. These spaces fill extremely quickly - typically completely full 2+ hours before kickoff for high-profile matches. Parking costs €3-5 for match days (cash or card accepted). Additional parking is available at the nearby El Mirador shopping centre (800m south, 10-minute walk), which offers free parking though the shopping centre may restrict match-day parking - arrive early to secure spaces before restrictions begin. Street parking in surrounding residential neighbourhoods of Ciudad del Campo and La Paterna is free but extremely limited and fills rapidly. Residents understandably claim most kerb-side spaces, leaving few options. For drivers, arriving at least 90-120 minutes before kickoff is strongly recommended, particularly for evening matches and European fixtures. Traffic approaching the stadium from the city centre via Avenida Marítima del Norte becomes congested 60-90 minutes before kickoff. Alternative routes via residential streets can bypass some congestion but add complexity. Post-match, expect 20-30 minutes to exit parking areas as thousands depart simultaneously. Many locals advise using park-and-ride approach: park free in Las Canteras beach area or city centre, then take bus - this often proves faster and less stressful than stadium parking scrambles.

🚶 From City Center

The stadium is approximately 4km from Las Palmas city centre (Teatro/Triana area), making it a 45-50 minute walk for energetic visitors. The route heads northeast along Avenida Marítima del Norte, following the coast before turning inland - straightforward and well-signposted on match days. However, Las Palmas' year-round warm climate makes this walk hot, particularly for afternoon kickoffs. From Las Canteras beach area (popular tourist accommodation), the stadium is approximately 5km - a 55-60 minute walk. Many fans walk from closer neighbourhoods including Schamann (20 minutes) or La Paterna (15 minutes), where some affordable accommodation exists. For visitors staying centrally or at beach hotels, walking is feasible for dedicated fans wanting match-day atmosphere build-up, but the distance and heat make buses more practical for most. Taxis are widely available throughout Las Palmas and relatively affordable by European standards. From Parque Santa Catalina or Teatro area, expect €7-10 to the stadium (10-15 minutes depending on traffic). From Las Canteras beach hotels, taxis cost €10-15. Post-match, taxi queues can be lengthy - allow 20-30 minutes waiting time immediately after final whistle. Surge pricing doesn't typically apply, but demand spikes significantly. Pre-booking return taxis through hotel reception or apps like Uber (available in Las Palmas) can avoid queues. Many visitors find sharing taxis with fellow supporters reduces costs - common practice and generally safe.

Our Recommendation

For pure match-day convenience, AC Hotel Gran Canaria (1.2km from the stadium) puts you closest to Estadio Gran Canaria with easy walking or taxi access. However, the location lacks the beach and city-centre atmosphere that makes Las Palmas special.

For luxury and history, Santa Catalina Royal Hideaway Hotel provides 5-star colonial elegance near the action. The grand hotel experience, beautiful gardens, and proximity to both the port and Vegueta old town create a special stay, with stadium access remaining convenient.

Avoid Maspalomas/Playa del Inglés resort hotels unless you're spending a week+ on a beach holiday with only one match day as an excursion. The 60km distance makes match attendance significantly more complicated.
